Important safety information: Wegovy has a boxed warning about the risk of thyroid C-cell tumors. In studies in rodents, semaglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumors, and it is not known whether it causes these tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma, in people. It is contraindicated in people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma and in people with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2. Serious risks described in the label include inflammation of the pancreas, gallbladder problems, low blood sugar, acute kidney injury, worsening of diabetic eye disease in people with type 2 diabetes, increased heart rate, serious allergic reactions, changes in mood or behavior including thoughts of suicide, and problems with food or liquid entering the lungs during anesthesia. What the label says the medicine is for
Wegovy is a semaglutide injection. The prescribing information defines its approved uses, the patients it is approved for, and the limitations of use. It is prescribed along with a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity, and the label describes that lifestyle part as a part of treatment, not an optional extra.

It is a once weekly injection
Wegovy is given as an injection under the skin, which is called a subcutaneous injection. The label directs one dose once each week, on the same day each week. It can be taken at any time of day, with or without food.
The day of the week can be changed if needed, as long as there are at least 48 hours between two doses. If you want to change your dosing day, ask the prescribing clinician or pharmacist first so the timing stays safe.
It is injected into the abdomen, the thigh, or the upper arm. Rotate the spot you use each week rather than injecting the same place repeatedly. The pen is single dose and is for one person only. Never share a pen, even if the needle is changed, because sharing can pass infection between people.
Doses usually start low and go up in steps
The prescribing information describes a step up schedule rather than starting at the full dose. Treatment starts at a low weekly dose, and the dose is increased at set intervals of about four weeks until the maintenance dose described in the label is reached. The label lists each step and the dose that goes with it.
The reason for the slow start is tolerance. Stomach and digestive side effects are the most common reason people struggle early, and the gradual increase is meant to reduce them. If side effects are difficult at a given step, the label describes delaying the increase, and the clinician may adjust the plan.
Do not change your own dose, double a dose, or move faster through the steps because progress feels slow. Dose changes are a clinical decision.
If you miss a dose
The label gives a rule for a missed weekly dose. If it has been five days or less since the missed dose, take it as soon as you can, then go back to your usual weekly day. If more than five days have passed, skip that dose and take the next one on your regular day.
If several weeks in a row are missed, do not guess. The prescribing information addresses restarting, and the clinician may have you begin again at a lower dose and step up. Call the clinic before injecting after a long gap.
Storage and handling
Wegovy is stored in the refrigerator, in its original carton, away from light. The label gives the exact refrigerated temperature range, and it also gives a limited period during which a pen may be kept at room temperature. Once that period is used, the pen is discarded even if medicine is left inside.
Do not freeze it, and do not use a pen that has been frozen or one whose liquid looks cloudy, colored, or has particles in it. Used pens and needles go in a sharps disposal container, not in household trash.
Side effects and when to call someone
The most commonly reported side effects in the label are digestive: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, headache, tiredness, upset stomach, dizziness, bloating, gas, heartburn, and irritation at the injection site. Many people find these are strongest after a dose increase.
Some symptoms need prompt medical attention. The Medication Guide lists severe stomach pain that will not go away, with or without vomiting, which can be a sign of pancreas inflammation. It also lists signs of gallbladder problems, signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat and trouble breathing, a lump or swelling in the neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, changes in vision, and changes in mood or behavior. Get urgent care for severe symptoms.
Tell the clinician about every prescription medicine, over the counter medicine, vitamin, and supplement you take, including medicines for diabetes, because some combinations raise the risk of low blood sugar. Also tell them if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding, and tell any surgeon or anesthesia team that you take this medicine before a procedure.
Follow up is part of using it correctly
Using the medicine well is not only about injection technique. The clinician who prescribes it should be reviewing how you tolerate each step, your other medicines, and whether the plan still makes sense for you.
Keep your follow up visits, report new symptoms as they happen, and be honest about missed doses. Do not stop, restart, or change treatment based on something you read online. Bring the question to the person who prescribed it.
